After initially focussing on painting, Doris Schmid has been working with comtemporary media since the year 2000: video and film – ranging from single channel works to spatial installations, often using photography. In form and content, she reflects the perception and construction of reality. Either as an immediate experience or as composed spaces of pictures and film, often in the form of spatial installations. There are recurring topics such as recollection, identity and transformation. In the past years, the body has been present in her work as a subject: Schmid is exploring the relationship of body and image, and of the body as a stage, reflection and projection surface.
In making use of an elaborate montage she intertwines real and film spaces, mixing the past and the present. She often films projected and superimposed image sequences and staged situations and image compositions to achieve alienation, spatial illusion or the sculpturing of time. She uses the narrative’s seductiveness though she is not telling a story with a linear plot. Enjoying working in co-operation, several of her works are the result from projects with artists working in other fields such as music, theater or literature.
