In Melissa Absarah Torres’ video work Catch Up (2021), a tomato and an olive embark on a journey to discover the tomato’s roots. The journey explores the history of colonization and its repercussions on today's globalized production and distribution of food. Through the process of engaging with its heritage and with the help of other vegetables, the tomato finds its way to self-empowerment. The playful staging and humorous parody of self-discovery stand in stark contrast to the significance of the subject and the profound dialogues of the protagonists. (Text: Eva-Maria Knüsel)
